[image: Eventfinda1170x504.jpg] *Songs for Humanity* *Saturday 1 August 2020, 5:30 pm* *Knox Church* .Visit https://www.citychoirdunedin.org.nz/p/tickets.html for ticketing information. We dedicate this performance to the many thousands of people worldwide who have died in the COVID-19 pandemic. The music has been chosen for its message of hope, comfort and peace. The highlight of this concert is Gabriel Fauré’s popular and very human *Requiem *mass. Written in the late 19th century and purely ‘for the pleasure of it’, Fauré described his *Requiem* as a lullaby of death and of a happy deliverance, rather than a painful experience. With distinctive colour and expressive shaping, it is sensitive, passionate and uplifting. Two young and aspiring Dunedin soloists, Scott Bezett and Caroline Burchell, will join City Choir in this performance. Three contemporary works complete the programme. New Zealander Christopher Marshall’s *Pastorale*, a work for men’s voices and soprano solo, is a setting of Psalm 23, ‘The Lord is my shepherd’. Marshall has created a distinctive sound-world with strings, organ and shimmering vibraphone rhythms which provide a background to the men’s chorus and a soaring solo voice. *Song of the Universal*, composed by the Norwegian, Ola Gjeilo, is a work for women’s voices, strings and piano. Gjeilo is one of the most frequently performed contemporary choral composers. Now resident in the US, he creates a distinctive sound-world, evolving a style that is often described as cinematic and evocative, with a lush, harmonious sound. A prayer for ‘health, peace [and] salvation universal’ could not be more appropriate in these anxious times. Completing the programme is *Dona nobis pacem* (‘Grant us peace’) by the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, now one of the most influential and praised European contemporary composers. *Dona nobis pacem* is an atmospheric and a tonally static work with chant-like melodic lines. Although only three words are sung throughout, the enriched texture and increasing harmonic tension impart a pleading, and at times almost anguished intensity to the text before it ends in serenity and hope. We are delighted that the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra will once again provide their excellent accompaniment to the choir’s voices.

The attached spreadsheet shows an imaginary scenario that has some semblance as to how we might organise this. The initial investors simply receive 'rebates' as new members join. That way, those who carry the burden of setup costs are compensated as new participants join the service. The later a new EV owner joins the cheaper it is. The sooner a new EV owner joins the more they receive as rebates. A variation on this, is that we might divert some of the transferred funds into a savings account to allow for maintenance and upgrades. Hi folks After discussion towards the end of the meeting, I thought it would be good to confirm that the flooring samples will be available for perusal at NumberWorks'nWords, (upstairs above Gordon Crichton Lighting) 90 Crawford Street on Saturday from 3pm to 6pm. I'm thinking that most people will want to come at the 3pm end of the timeslot to take advantage of the daylight. Skylights let natural light into the building, but of course you can wander outside with samples to take another look. In the unlikely event that you arrive and the outside door has been inadvertently locked by some other tenant leaving the building, ph me on 027 455 4559 because I'll definitely be there from 2pm through to just after 6pm. 474 1104 is the NumberWorks'nWords number, if you want to catch hold of me between 3pm and 8pm Friday night. Hi All, Agenda attached. Please note: 1. Note the slightly different meeting venue as described in the agenda. 2. The flooring samples will be available in the meeting room for viewing from 7pm with the meeting starting at 7:30pm sharp. So, unless you're a snap decision maker in these matters, please arrive early enough to allow time to peruse and decide. 3. The full range of samples at McKenzie & Willis are not quite ready (i.e. in store) yet. An update will be distributed as soon as they arrive. 4. To those attending in person, please bring the coloured cards that you have been using for the Zoom meetings. We will need them. Also, if anyone has any more or can access sets, please bring those along too, for the folk who had to improvise through the Zoom meetings.
