Hi All, Does anyone have a video cable for connecting a laptop to the data projector? We’re planning to have a slideshow running in the background during today’s opening-day afternoon tea and the open day tomorrow. We were successfully using the projector during last week’s induction workshop so there must be one around. Thanks, Anthony

Morena and greetings to all who aren't on WhatsApp. This is the message I sent out last night re koha for today. This is a special time for us all at Toiora- welcoming baby Esther and our cohousing project being blessed by Kai Tahu today. I for one am very moved by this support from Kai Tahu, and frankly feel undeserving. I imagine this speaks to Kai Tahu feeling we share 'guardianship' of this land - but without their support, we wouldn't be here. As a group, we are apparently giving a small koha, however, its appropriate we each offer something towards this as we are able. Donald is happy to receive donations to include with the group koha. Thanks too to Jeffrey offering a last minute tune up of our chosen Waita - and to Anne for her reminder that the point is not to be wonderful, so much as to make a 'joyous noise' !! Opening day

Hi Everyone, Here are the highlights of what’s to come during tomorrow’s formal opening. Main event At 2pm, we gather with invited guests on the footpath outside the Montpellier Street entrance, from where representatives of Kāi Tahu will lead us around the corner into Alva Street and down the driveway towards the common house. We’ll stop in the vicinity of the car park, where the kaumatua will give a blessing, and the visitors may sing a waiata. Catherine will speak. The Mayor will plant the tree. Donald will speak and we’ll sing our waiata, E tu kahikatea (which we’ll practise earlier in the day). After the waiata, we’ll enter the common house for afternoon tea. Preparatory blessing Earlier in the day, at 10.30am, Kāi Tahu will pay a visit to the site to bless the three different blocks: Alva Street, High Street and the common house. Anyone who is around is welcome to join in, setting out from the Montpellier Street entrance. A working bee will be under way from 10am to prepare the common house for the afternoon tea, and those involved might like to pause and join in the blessing, which will take about 20 minutes. Cars Please leave cars on the street so the car park is clear by 2pm. Weather The forecast is cloudy, but fingers crossed the rain will hold off. Meal Train for Karen and Sander

Kia ora koutou, I have created a Meal Train for Karen and Sander, as a way for cohousers to help them out if they wish to. A meal train is simply a schedule for co-ordinating people who wish to make and drop off a meal as a way of supporting the new parents. I've tried to include everyone but if I've missed you and you want to know about it, please let me know (I had to input everyone's emails individually) - you should have an email with a link from "take them a meal". Karen is doing Chinese confinement so I asked her to give me some information to educate us all about that. It's included in the meal train information but here it is below as well: *Preferred drop-off time for meals for you?* Around 6-7 pm is fine. Food can be dropped off on the table inside by the back door. *Can you give me a short explanation of what you're doing for confinement:* Karen will go strictly to the Chinese confinement after delivery. Confinement (Sitting the month) is a Chinese tradition to recover for one month after delivery. During this month, mothers stay indoor to rest most of time, and do not normally receive visitors. Mothers will avoid touching tap water, or go outdoor to prevent capturing the cold and wet energy. There’s a special diet made up of confinement foods targeted towards specific functions like dispelling “wind” from the body, quelling heatiness, boosting blood circulation, increase mom’s milk supply, revitalizing strength, etc. *Special instructions/dietary restrictions* - Hot (temperature) cooked food. No salads. - No beef, no shrimps, no shellfish. - No deep fried foods, no Indian curries, no spicy foods. - During Week 1 and 2 confinement foods are clean and easily digestible foods, e.g. chicken or fish soup, multi-grain porridge with chicken or pork, steamed eggs, steamed veggies, little bit of ginger, and overall a lighter not so greasy food. - Week 3-4: More veggies and meat(chicken,pork,fish) for strength recovery: Lots of grains(mostly rice), stir fry, chicken soups, chicken dishes with sesame oil, lots of ginger, and cooking wine. There is no pressure to participate but knowing how lovely we all are I thought it'd be helpful to set something up for those of us who are keen to be involved :). Jess

This is Esther. She was born after midnight today. She is doing really well. Karen is recovering from a very exhausting day that ended up with a C-section. We hope to bring Esther to her Toiora home this weekend.
