*A final note on finials…..*
Marianne had also understood that one association with Finials was to keep witches out, but Rainer tells us that in Germany, they are vital in protecting houses from fork lightning, which they get a lot of, as opposed to sheet lightning which is more common here. Each house has a metal rod extending over the roof line, which connects down into the earth, to neutralize the otherwise high risk of fire!
