Induction and non-Pot-luck, now takeaways on Saturday

A small subcommittee, self-appointed and formed in the kitchen at the Sustainablity Centre at 9.40pm last night, made the decision to change our "after induction get together" from pot luck to Chinese Takeaways. I've stepped up to be the organizer for this. We discovered that the Centre has small plates and plenty of glasses/cups, but nowhere near enough cutlery and no way of heating food. So it seemed easier for us to decide at the 4pm conclusion of the induction how many are coming to the meal at 5pm, then order takeaways which we can pick up and bring to the Centre for 5pm start. $10 per head (I've never done this before, so if you are experienced at pricing this sort of thing, and that seems unreasonable, please email me back and I can adjust) So no need for pot-luck contributions at 5pm, but you will need to bring $10. If you are able to attend the induction 2-4pm, please bring something for afternoon tea. If you won't be at the induction on Saturday 8 June but will be coming for the meal at 5pm, can you please email me or text me on 027 455 4559 your intentions so that I can include you when putting in the order at 4pm. Please send through any comments, suggestions, concerns..... Dear Rob, At our UCOL meeting on Thursday 6 June we discussed the request to erect an eHaus sign at the High Street Cohousing site. The wording of the sign generated considerable discussion - "eHaus is proud to be building the first Passihaus Cohousing project in NZ". You (Stevenson & Williams) are our builders, not eHaus. According to our understanding, something like "eHaus are proud to involved in developing the first Passivhaus Cohsouing project in NZ" would be more accurate. We would like to know whether Stevenson & Williams agrees with the suggested wording. We are also aware that the sign we had erected has been blown down and damaged in the recent wind, and we would not be happy to see an eHaus sign replacing it. Perhaps eHaus would be willing to reinstate our sign and then could put an eHaus sign alongside it.

site visit update

Hi all The site remedial work is now complete. They were able to do the remedial work by just compacting engineering fill without the need for mass concrete (no formwork either!) with approval of the geotech engineer! This means that all of the ground under the Alva block is now ‘good' ground. Today they started the excavation (in this remediated ground) for the end retailing wall and footing as per our original drawings! The High Street block is progressing well. The remaining concrete slab at the Alva Street end will be poured on Monday. In about a month time (early July) S&W will start cladding the west end of the High Street block. The building will be clad in stages, when ever possible, to protect the SIP’s from the weather. S&W is pricing cladding options that Tim has proposed. Once we get the prices back we as a group will need to make a decision on the choice of cladding. This may well be coming Thursday. So much for today. regards Rainer I check my emails once a day. We are feeling pretty good; having overcome our first building setback and now seeing irrefutable, concrete signs of progress. The building setback happened just before Christmas, when soft ground was discovered. The timing meant the construction had an extra-long halt over the holiday period as we grappled with possible solutions. A way forward was decided, but the slower than expected progress on our new units meant that windows ordered from Germany arrived before the walls were up, necessitating storage. We watched as these extra costs ate up a portion of our “contingency fund”, but consoled ourselves with the silver lining of Stevenson and Williams bringing forward the work on the units attached to our Common House. These had been previously scheduled for later completion. It is great to walk past and see them taking shape. Walking past is all we can do because there is no access now that High Street School has turned into a building site. We have been lucky to be able to use the wonderful facilities at the University of Otago’s Sustainability Centre, so our meeting schedule continues. Starting the build has meant that they’ve been somewhat dominated with construction concerns. Ann Zabaldo, from Takoma Village Cohousing, Washington DC, visited us and her “imagine the first day” prompt was a good way of re-focussing on building community rather than houses. At our last Thursday night meeting we decided to hold monthly Saturday afternoon sessions, with potluck to follow, to give us a break fom the responsibilities of the multi-million-dollar-build-project. We’ll continue the work on writing our Body Corp rules and get to know each other better in the process. There’s now only a one bedroom and a two/three bedroom unit available. Attendance at an Induction Workshop remains a prerequisite for purchasing any unit, so we continue to run these as required. Skype has been used for people who cannot physically make it to Dunedin. Our next Induction Workshop is scheduled for Saturday 8 June. We look forward to selling the last unit and welcoming another family into the High Street Cohousing experience. Hei kona mai Jan

Morena, team; see attached draft meeting notes. Corrections/ amendments to me please asap. I'm sorry that my mind has blanked on a few surnames but it seems more important to get these notes out promptly than wait! I will add these into the finalized meeting notes. Please note that we will be having an ordinary UCOL meeting next thurs 13th June and a 'Special' meeting to discuss legal representation only on thurs 27th June. On Sat 29th June, Anne will host a potluck mid winter dinner at her house in Pacific Street from 6pm. Nothing serious is planned for that event, tho' do bring a 'Secret Santa' gift to be given away. ( We have used this in the past as an opportunity to recycle / gift on something we don't need, so no $ needs to be spent). Meal after induction workshop

Hi all, Looking again at the facilities available to us for a meal in the Centre for Sustainability, we have decided that a better option would be to send out for takeaways - Chinese? Thai? Fish&Chips? Pizza? - A consensus will of course have to be reached. Anyway, this would mean that everyone would be asked to split the cost of whatever food is ordered. We hope that this will be OK with everyone - we certainly want everyone who can to stay for the meal. And UCOLers who can't come for the afternoon are very welcome to arrive at 5pm - it would be good to let Jan or Min know if you will be coming. Warm regards, Anne
