Hi all,
GROUND REMEDIATION SITE MEETING We had a site meeting today to start the process of groundworks remediations. Builders/QS/Contractors and Geotech discussed their plan forward for the coming weeks. All going well, we should see a start on this around mid week. Anne has deliver a letter to neighbours notifying them of the work that will take place in the coming weeks (this was requested by DCC yesterday as part of our RC). Lets hope for good weather…
ROOF On a different matter, the builders have highlighted a few concerns regarding the status of the ROOF of the existing building. They have already installed a new roof over the future kitchen and extended this to the eastern external wall. There are a few patches in the existing building (see image below).
We had a look at it on site and have asked SW for an estimate to remove the skylights and replace the whole roof with a new roof. Skylights are no longer needed as the proposal is for covering under them. They create areas of potential problems in a near future with old flashings, internal gutters in some situations, etc. Stefan has asked SW to provide a quote for this.
We should be prepared to discuss this and make a desision at our next meeting. It is really important to make a decision quickly as they are currently progressing fast in the existing building while waiting for the ground of the new to be ready for foundations.
Thanks,
Maria

Hi Maria,
The directors are meeting this evening, and have read your email regarding the roof of the common house.
When the provision of new roofing is being considered, please could it include the possibility of solar tubes or some other means of providing natural light into the large room (old library).
Thanks, Anne

We thought about it and discussed that on site today. We thought is was a good idea to have an idea of the cost for the roof first and look at options to bring natural light to the main space after. Let’s think about it. Maria

I'm generally against breaking up the roof envelope for solar tubes - essentially punching a hole in the continuous roof surface. I feel this would be a weak spot for leaks, etc. My preference would be for a continuous roof if possible, and to add solar panels on later - enough to power the common house during the daytime. However, if the builders, etc feel this will not be a problem, then I don't feel strongly enough about it to oppose the installation of solar tubes/skylights to the common house.
Perhaps we could retain one of the existing skylights over the central part of the building for natural lighting, since it is are already there.
Regards Min
