Appliances

Hi Sara - we missed you tonight, hope you were having fun. When you read tonight’s notes you’ll see topic 12 was about appliances - and that the joiners need to have one of each model of stove top, oven and (I think) range hood to be confidant about fitting them into joinery. It seemed the best way to do this was for us confirm our total order ( to be paid for prior to completion) but to assist joiners a few individuals would buy (and pay for) one sample of each now. My ordinary electric stovetop and oven are modest but I’d be happy to pay for them now if that is useful. Ditto my range hood, though I think it is the only one of that model, so they may or may not care about that. So let me know if you’d like me to buy mine now, Best, G Gay Buckingham +64 27 4544012

Hi all, Some matters for information, largely 1/ Our application to DCC Heritage Fund for assistance with the Memorial Arch has been received, and the application will be heard in this month's funding round. Many thanks to Rosemarie who put together the application and submitted it. 2/ A report of the visit of the Legal Liaison Group with Simon Milne of McMillan&Co is attached. 3/ Last Thursday Tim and I spent an hour on site with Marama Davidson and Nicola (her PA/sidekick). Enthusiastic response to the project and to passivhaus design, and very positive mention in Marama's speech to Green Party conference. We said we would invite her to the party when we move in! I have been asked to coordinate a series for U3A (University of the 3rd Age). U3A members are mostly retired/semi-retired, but are interested in keeping their minds active on a wide range of topics: we never stop learning. The title I was given was \"The business of growing old\". However, as most members of U3A are probably feeling their age to a greater or lesser extent, I thought they would be more likely to sign up/attend if I called it \"Future Choices: Ironing Out the Wrinkles\"... Certainly Housing comes under the umbrella of Future Choices and I hope to have a session on various options: retirement village, co-housing, Abbeyfield and what supports are available to help folk stay in their own homes. Dates for the series of 6 x U3A talks next year are Tues afternoons 2.15-4.15pm, March 3 - April 7, 2020. Talks are in 2 halves of 40-45mins with break in between for cuppa etc. Good to leave >/= 5mins for questions in each half. I thought I would try and get 2 speakers to share each half. It is most likely, but not definite at this stage, that series will be held at the Otago Golf Club premises off Helensburgh Rd. (V. small chance venue may change.) I hope you are able to contribute and, if not, perhaps can suggest someone else in your field. Site visit with Stephen Edge 1st August.

Hi all Maria and I met Stephen on site. It turns out the main reason for his Dunedin visit was to get a feel for the progress on our site. Two trucks were delivering the last shipment of the Sips and they were hoisted directly onto the top floors. He then asked how many workers are usually on site, as there were only a hand full in sight. I said, many would probably be in the common house (Maria was hoping I was right..). So we had a look and presto, two M-units were buzzing with workmen. He also asked what our questions were and was happy to hear that we would be back in touch after our meeting with our lawyers which is scheduled for Tuesday. Stephen left very satisfied after the 3/4 hour visit and gave us a big wave as he headed off. He thinks he will be back in October. Regards Rainer Please call me if you need an urgent reply. Hi team: at the end of yesterday's meeting, Jan invited me to put some notes together and so I've done so, entirely from memory, so I know I'll have left out things that others may want to add in. Present: Jan, Gay, Min, Anne, Sara, Maria, Miriam, Donald, Sandy, Frances, Warren, Pauline, Sue T, Alex and myself. Thanks to Jan, Gaye and Min for creating a lively and informative work shop yesterday afternoon, and also to Sander for letting us in to the Centre. For those of you who weren't there, here's a few highlights as I recall them - and others, please add your recollections. We first formed into small groups and shared the skills we're willing to bring. Examples included pruning roses and fruit trees; planting vegetable gardens; shopping for families on a limited income; sewing large curtains and supplying sewing machines ( it seems at least five are available); bread making ( with and without bread makers); 'fixing things' ( at least two of our group cite this as a hobby); cleaning ( Sara had already decided as she is close to the Guest accommodation, she was willing to ensure this is clean and tidy for visitors- a most welcome offer!), dishwashing and general kitchen clean up ( at least three people cited this as something they find enjoyable), food preparation/ chopping/ etc; food shopping; meal planning; a capacity to listen and keep listening ( a heartening number of people); a large and inexhaustible capacity for optimism in the creativeness of groups ( at least two of us); Jan on being a 'night owl' so highly likely to be up in the Common House till 1am if anyone can't sleep/ wants a chat; being willing to demonstrate 7 minute fitness workouts; to teach dance; and a willingness to follow directions. A great start! As the saying goes 'hungry people see cake shops' and I know my ears will have been finely attuned to certain pieces of information, such as number of nights we'd like to have meals available in the common house, and less to others. so there'll be more. We then talked about what we were looking for. Responses included always knowing there was always someone who'd be willing to go to the movies; opportunities to learn new skills such as languages, work working, fitness ( especially if its possible to turn up in pajamas); vegetable growing; plant cultivation; sharing / rationalizing vehicles; meals provided at least a couple of nights a week; informal socializing; child care; computer technological advice; expanded kitchen skills; learning more about the foods of different cultures; and creating opportunities for celebration and community. Reference was made to Jan's vision for the Family Fun Day in June 2018 when against the general skepticism of many in the group, she created a highly successful day that had close to 300 adults and children through the site participating in a range of activities to fit every age group, and all in three weeks! We were all surprised both by how successful it was and how much fun we each had. It gave us an idea of how we can pool together to create positive events for our group and the wider community. We finished the day after a couple of 'straw polls' about how many meals we'd like to see provided in the common house each week. Across this group, the mean number was two, with a possible addition of a 'pot luck Friday'. Timing of meals varied between 6 - 8pm, with a mean of 7pm, taking into account the needs of young children and also the habits of the two night owls, who tend to eat at 10pm at present. The suggested number of cooks and assistants on each 'cook team' was four, with two more experienced folk and two 'choppers/ stirrers/ sorters. We wound up at 5pm. Thanks again to all who contributed to a lively afternoon! Next month's meeting will be focusing more directly on Body Corp rules. Hi all, You are the guinea pigs/editors for the next Irregular Newsletter - unless anyone spots anything majorly wrong, this will be sent in a couple of days to our 'general interest' mailing list. Kia Ora This sixth irregular newsletter is being typed so enthusiastically because on Friday I participated in a site-visit. Our Builders, Stevenson and Williams, scheduled guided site-visits, so as S&W employees downed their tools for lunch we donned hard hats and filed in to take a look at the work that has been done. First attraction was the Common House. The kitchen area has been created, guest rooms are recognisable, workshop, meeting room, office … so exciting to see it taking shape. We took particular note of the position of our wood-burner – more specifically, where the flue for the woodturner will go. The actual wood-burner is one of the items on our list of “out of any money left in the contingency once the build is completed”. We drew down the first portion of money from our Kiwibank loan this month, which puts us pretty much on track with the plans we made before the build commenced. When we started construction, we were still looking for buyers for two units. Three wonderfully philanthropic people “bought in” with no intention of living at High Street Cohousing, but wanted to see the project proceed and were hoping to sell their two units before settlement. Interest in our project at the last induction workshop was such that these two units have now been re-assigned. Now we even have a waiting list for any units that may become available. Our thanks and gratitude to these three, whose financial support enabled us to get started. It is great to feel that our community is at last complete. We’re enjoying our monthly “Body Corp” meetings, although we are still to get to grips with task of refining our rules! In the most recent we shared ideas about what we wanted to bring to the community, and the skills and knowledge that we hoped others were going to be able to contribute so we can create our personal vision of what living in cohousing is going to be like. As always when my fellow cohousers get together, there was more food than we could eat and just the right amount of laughter for an enjoyable and productive Saturday afternoon. Once again, our thanks to University of Otago’s Sustainability Centre for making their seminar room available to us while construction keeps us away from our High Street site.
